Suspension Base Suppliers +

This page has been completely updated including the addition of suppliers from/for the USA, Canada, Australia and much of the EU. 6/26/16

The suspension base needed for frankening has always been an issue worthy of researching and I did plenty before TKB Trading began selling their franken polish bases; once they did though there was no further need to find alternatives until their supply of pints starting running low and/or on reserve. I went back to what I do best, digging, andd decided to share any and all other suppliers I could find. I'll add to it as I go along and if you've got some information I don't, feel free to contribute. Be advised that I've bought base from Glitter Unique and TKB Trading only so I don't know which of these companies require a professional license of some type to place an order. -MK

At the very bottom of this page, after the suppliers, is any and all research that I'd gathered about suspension base, if you're curious.

Magnesium Stearate may be used as a suspending agent in powder cosmetics but it will not work in nail polish.
While Stearalkonium Hectorite might be used or listed more frequently as a suspension agent for nail polish, Stearalkonium Bentonite is the ingredient used in TKB Trading's suspension bases. Click for more info.
Suspension Agent
The specific formulas are guarded as trade secrets, but they all are combinations of:
• Pigment, for color and covering power. There are many different colors and color combinations.
• Film-former, to make the polish hard and shiny when it  dries. The most common film-former is nitrocellulose. Old-fashioned black-and-white movie film is made of nitrocellulose.
• Resin, to make the polish tough and resilient. Tosylamide/ formaldehyde is the resin of choice for salon nail polish.
• Solvent, to make the polish easy to apply. Most salon brands use a combination of butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, and toluene. Solvents are also used in nail polish removers.
• Clay, to suspend and keep the ingredients mixed and make the polish easier to apply.
• Plasticizer, to prevent chips and cracks. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has been used for many decades as a nail polish plasticizer. It is also used in soft toys, and baby bottles, and tubes for dispensing food and medicine.
• UV stabilizer, to prevent sun and light from fading or changing the color.

What can I do if sedimentation occurs in my nail varnish formulation?
Sedimentation of pigments could appear. Use a nail base containing thixotropes such as stearalkonium bentonite or fumed silica for proper suspension of pigments.

Fumed silica
Fumed silica is produced in a combustion process where silicon tetrachloride vapors are burned in a hydrogen oxygen flame of 1800°C. The resulting SiO2 molecules collide with each other and condense to form spherical particles by agglomeration. Final products are offered as surface treated or untreated grades with varying surface areas as well as different chemical and physical surface treatments to meet specific customer needs (eg hydropho-bicity). Typical functions of fumed silica include: thixotropy, suspension stability, anti-caking in dry powder formulations, temperature stability of viscosity, moisture resistance, carrier function (eg for perfumes) and emulsification (act as secondary binder). Applications include toothpaste, dental powders, sunscreens, antiperspirants (aerosol and solid), fragrance (absorbing agent), nail polish (prevention of pigment settling), powders (maintaining free flow characteristics), lipstick (resistance of softening with increased temperature), make-up and creams.

Clear and translucent nail polish compositions comprise stabilized colorant systems contained therein whereby pigments, dyes, glitter, mica and pearls are uniformly dispersed throughout the nail polish. The nail polish is clear and not opaque nor do the colorants settle during storage over time. The system is made possible using a silica-based suspension agent consisting of fumed silica in a traditional nail polish base further comprising one or more solvents, film-forming agents, resins, plasticizers and the like. Preferably, micas, glitter, pearls and/or ornamental sparkles are uniformly dispersed throughout the clear to translucent polish and are visible therein.
Stearalkonium Hectorite
Stearalkonium Hectorite
Thickening agents (e.g. stearalkonium hectorite) are added to maintain the sparkling particles in suspension while in the bottle.

What is it?
Stearalkonium Hectorite is a creamy white, fine powder. In cosmetics and personal care products, Stearalkonium Hectorite is used in a wide variety of products including lipstick, eye makeup, and nail polish and other manicuring products.
Safety Information
The safety of Stearalkonium Hectorite has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that Stearalkonium Hectorite was safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products under the present practices of use.
Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Stearalkonium Hectorite functions as a suspending agent.

Stearalkonium Hectorite is a reaction product of hectorite and Stearalkonium Chloride used in a wide variety of cosmetic formulations as a suspending agent-nonsurfactant. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) previously evaluated the safety of Stearalkonium Chloride and an ingredient containing hectorite (Quaternium-18 Hectorite), and found both safe as currently used in cosmetic formulations. Hectorite clay is one of the minerals that make up bentonite clay. Stearalkonium Hectorite is formed by the cation exchange reaction of hectorite clay and Stearalkonium Chloride. The amount of free amines and amine hydrocarbons residual from this reaction is 0.45%; 0.5% sodium chloride is also present as an impurity. Stearalkonium Hectorite is used at concentrations up to 5% in cosmetics. In short-term dermal toxicity studies in rabbits at concentrations of 12.5% to 50%, no toxicity was observed. Stearalkonium Hectorite (50%) did not cause primary skin irritation in rabbits. Ocular toxicity test results in animals indicated only no or mild reactions. Stearalkonium Hectorite was not mutagenic in the Ames test or in a mouse lymphoma cell forward mutation assay. No data were available on the reproductive or developmental toxicity of this ingredient or of Stearalkonium Chloride; no birth defects were seen in a developmental toxicity study in rats using myristalkonium chloride. Stearalkonium Hectorite was not an ocular or skin irritant or a skin sensitizer in clinical tests. The potential that nitrosation of this ingredient or its impurities could occur to form nitrosamines was considered. Because any quaternary chlorides or amine hydrochlorides become strongly bonded to the hectorite clay, as does any residual Stearalkonium Chloride, they are not readily available for nitrosation. Based on the available data, it was concluded that Stearalkonium Hectorite is safe for use in cosmetics under the present practices of use.
Stearalkonium Bentonite
Polish Made to Last
Not only do consumers want long-lasting, durable polish on their nails, they also want polish that will last inside the bottle as well. "Customers are looking for suspension of pigments to ensure consistency in the bottle," explained Alison Nally, regional sales manager, Sud-Chemie Inc., a specialty chemicals provider. "Proper leveling of the film and even application are important." To meet these needs, the company has launched Tixogel LG (Stearalkonium Bentonite), which is used worldwide in nail lacquer formulations. According to Nally, the ingredient can lead to nail polishes that have better suspension with excellent flow characteristics. "Research is currently under way to improve the low shear rheology for shelf stability improvement and should...

Clay, Bentonite
Highest quality Western Bentonite is an adsorbent, swelling type clay. A very fine grained volcanic ash clay added to clays to improve plasticity. A clay like mineral consisting largely of montmorillonite, and characterized by its high absorptive power and active colloidal properties. In masks it's not normally used as the predominant clay due to it's ability to absorb large quantities of water (thus making the mask product take a very long time to dry). It is however used in smaller quantities to make mask products more elastic. Also used to suspend pigments, thicken lotions and absorb oil. Inert and non-toxic. Raw clay specifications: SiO2 65.68%  Al2O3 21.00%  K2O 0.32%  Na2O 2.26%  MgO 3.07%  CaO 0.59%  Fe2O3 3.18%  TiO2 0.16%

Ethyl methacrylate
A thickening agent used in nail polish, artificial nails. Skin irritation, allergic reactions, neurotoxicity, allergic contact dermatitis, teratogenic.

What is it? Ethyl Methacrylate is a colorless, liquid substance. It is used as an ingredient in artificial nail products.

The safety of Ethyl Methacrylate has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel reviewed the scientific data and concluded that Ethyl Methacrylate was safe for use in the formulation of artificial nail products when accompanied by directions to avoid skin contact because of the possibility of an allergic reaction to Ethyl Methacrylate.

Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Ethyl Methacrylate is used as an artificial nail builder in artificial fingernail enhancement products.

  1. Hello, I was wondering if anyone has used the "suspending nail polish" from Bramble Berry and if it was worth purchasing? Thanks!

    1. I would imagine the product is so new, very few, if any, have tried it yet. I will say the ingredients are on par with the expected so I don't see a reason that it wouldn't work.

    2. I have used Bramble berry and I really am happy with it. It is super fast shipping compared to TKB!

  2. Ok, thank you! I am new to all this and trying to get all the supplies and don't want to waste my money on supplies that are not going to work well. I did contact TKB and she said that they should have the glamour base back in stock in 7-10 days. So I may just hold off til then to get it since everyone has nothing but great things to say about their products/supplies.

  3. This comment has been removed by the author.

  4. Wow, this is so helpful!

Do you know if there are any alternatives to TKB's colored franken bases right now (since they seem to have disappeared from the site)? I was really looking forward to making some jellies with them. :(

    1. They just restocked a slightly different formulation of the old ones, check their new page.

  5. Thank you! This post is a gold mine to us.

I love mixing my own nail polishes, and doing craft with them. My next project require a lot of clear nail polish, at least 32oz, maybe 1 gallon. Can you recommend me the most inexpensive place to order some clear nail polish? It doesn't need to have suspension property. Top coat or base coat would do. The clear nail polish place I found have high price, higher than the suspension nail polish you listed, which doesn't make much sense since suspension polish is clear polish with added ingredients.

    Thank you so much.

  6. Hi! Verry helpfull. Do you know any supliers who ship to the EU? (Suspension base, glitter)

    1. No, I'm afraid not. Hazmat regulations make overseas shipping expensive.

    2. Hi KittykatRaya, I am a UK supplier of clear suspension base and ship to most EU countries. It is available from 100ml up to 1000ml bottles. You can see my base at Manda Makes here

  7. Hey I found Glitties Nail Art from your Suppliers Page and just wanted to let you know that they also do a lot of Frankening and have a lot of solvent resistant glitter and a suspension base as well.

  8. FYI - the nail lite "colour additives" and not worth purchasing. and they have a stink about them that is anything but nice!

  9. Hi, can the topcoat and base coat be used as franken fillers? Like May, I am looking for a clear polish but everywhere I find they only sell suspension base, only for those situated in US and canada that they have the clear base polish option. But as I am outside of US and canada, this option is invalid.

I don't mind using topcoat for my frankens, but do you know if it will spoil the polish in any ways? The reason being that I am using them for commercial purposes. Since there has to be some difference in terms of topcoat and clear polish (topcoat has more ingredients), I was wondering the suitability of topcoat as a replacement for clear polish filler. Thank you so much.

  14. There's an Etsy store called vanti805 that sells GREAT liquid pigments for nail polish as powder dyes for polish or make-up. She also sells small funnels, mixing beads,a scale, measuring cups, and some other tools, and recently started selling glitter suspension base, mica / pigment suspension base, and a great top coat that can also be used to "thin" the suspension bases out if you need to. I've purchased both the liquid pigments and bases from her and the shipping is fast and prices are great.

    1. Yes, I am late in responding. Honestly, I don't remember if I added that seller to my list or not yet but thank you for the information. Always good to have plenty of sources. And thank you for visiting.

  15. This is probably a tough one... I am looking for a kid friendly waterbased, non toxic base. I want to add my own colors, etc. Anyone have the slightest idea as to where to look? Thanks!

    1. I apologize for the delay in my response. Let me look around, see if I can find anything and if I do, I'll let you know here.
